4. Panmunjom Checkpoint: The Illusion of Kijong-dong, the Propaganda Village
A wide-angle shot of the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) Panmunjom checkpoint captures the familiar scene of Kijong-dong, or “propaganda village.” Built as an enticement for South Koreans to return during the 1950s, the empty buildings look occupied, with timed programmed lighting that comes on and then off but is still unused. This image of Kijong-dong does more than capture the DMZ’s surreal nature and the ongoing standoff between North and South Korea.
