2. The Titanic Bridge Steering Motor: A Perspective from 2004
In 2004 the discovery of the Titanic’s steering motor in the bridge added another piece to the much larger puzzle. It is the bottom of the Atlantic, a lying preserved, this great bit of the navigating system of the ship, gives almost an unreal view into history. Somehow it is a reminder of the officers, who once on board, the great vessel with silent witnesses stood to those final hours. This relic captures the final moments of the Titanic just before the tragedy and allows us to revisit a bygone era when the ship was ablaze with hope and activity.
