The town of Tianying, Anhui Province, China is a lead production hub for the country. However, a slack regulation has turned this into one of China’s most polluted areas. Lead levels in the town have risen to hazardous levels as there is unregulated industrial activity, especially battery recycling. This has resulted in high anemia and kidney cases among the town’s 30,000 people. The low efforts to address pollution notwithstanding, there is yet much-needed improvement, which tells more of the price for having put production ahead of the environment and public health concerns.
