World War I: German Soldier in Dugout
Trench warfare was one of the horrible periods during World War I, employing troops from every country that had the capability. This tactic arose in the Civil War, digging deep ditches for protection and defense. Long periods of time passed as troops in the Western Front, especially France and Belgium, lived in narrow trenches for weeks. However, trenches led to many casualties due to soldiers venturing into ‘no man’s land’, which exposed them to enemy machine gun fire.
